Note for 08 Mar 00: I went with Derek Anderson and Tim Helmer. What a beautiful day. Not a cloud in the sky, temperatures were around 5°C (41°F). Winds were calm and the snow pack was firm. We went from car to Bow Hut in about 3.5 hours. After a long lunch, we went to the St. Nicholas/Olive col and summitted St. Nicholas and was back at the hut by 1500-ish.
Note for 15 Feb 03: I went with Blair Piggot. Very windy day with temperatures around 0°C. Skiing back to the hut was okay, but nothing to brag about. We planned on Gordon as our trip, but when we got on the Wapta, thick clouds had moved in, so we went for St. Nick instead. Once at the Olive/St. Nick col, the clouds disappeared. Not much snow on the glacier, and a couple of crevasses were visable.

First, you make your way to Bow Hut. After reading those directions, come back to these.

Here we see Mt. St. Nicholas' north face. Fortunately, this isn't the side you climb. Instead, you should ascend the south ridge. To head up there, from the hut, ascend to the west up moderate slopes. Contour around the west side of Nicholas until you are at the southern end of it, at the Olive col.

This is the view of St. Nick as you circle around the peak making your way to the col. As you can tell, the ridge isn't as bad as it looks from the northeast side.

Follow the red line to the Olive/St. Nick col.

Now we are at the col. Drop your skis, and start walking. It's only about 45 minutes (round trip) to knock this one out. Basically, just walk up the ridge. Just before the summit is the only real steep part.

After one final crux step, which isn't very difficult, you are up on the summit. Raise your axe and jump for joy.

The views from the top are just incredible. We were blessed that day with clear skies and high visability. Looking down, you can see the entire route from Num Ti Jah Lodge to the Bow Hut.

Looking toward the north, you can see Mt. Chephren (C), Mt. Thompson (T), and Mt. Murchinson (M). You could probably have seen Mt. Columbia, but we could never decide which one it was.

Looking toward the east, you can see Crowfoot Mtn (C) and between the notches of Crowfoot Mtn, you can see Dolomite Peak (D).

Looking just south of the above picture, you can see Mt. Hector (H) and Little Hector (L).

Looking west, across the wapta, you can see Mt. Gordon (our original objective for the day).
