Note for 18 Jan 04: I went with Dan Ronsky. This was a quick trip to get Dan some backcountry skiing experience before we do something bigger. Thick cloud was below us at the Sunshine Village ski resort, but for the most of the day, we enjoyed warm temperatures and good visibility. For a detailed trip report, click here.

This is looking at Twin Cairns from the top of the Wawa Chair at Sunshine Village. We crossed over to the right skyline ridge (in the shade) and ascended that to the north (right) summit. We then took off our skis and went to the true summit at the south end.

This is a close up of the shoulder that we yo-yo'd. It was good steep skiing, but pretty short.

Here I am just past the top of the Wawa Chair at Sunshine, with the Standish Quad in the background. There is a little flat meadow behind the Wawa Chair where Dan and I ran through some "find the beacon" exercises. After about an hour of that, we ventured SW toward Simpson Pass.

What would Dan's first AT experience be like if he didn't break trail? Here I am following behind Dan to ensure that his trail breaking is of acceptable standards. In the background, you can see part of Sunshine Village. On the left is Goat's Eye Mtn (Sunshine's name). In the middle, are the twin peaks of Mt. Howard Douglas, and the right is Brewster Rock. Sunshine Village gets these names all screwed up on their maps.

I'm not sure what happened here, but I must have grown impatient with Dan and passed him. Here I am leading my way up through rocks to reach the summit ridge.

This is me at the north end of the summit ridge. In the background in the Monarch. It's a pretty big mountain, but it sure does look inviting.

This is looking south along the summit ridge. The true summit (shown in the background) is at the south end of it.

With a quick bite to eat, we're off to the summit. The ridge was a bit wind-blown, so we left our skis at the north end and hiked over to the south end.

Here's a picture of Dan and I at the summit. After this picture, I took my camera back from Dan. No more of these stupid shots.

This is Dan standing at the summit with Mt. Bourgeau in the background.

So, we hiked back over to our skis, then got ready for some good skiing. The NE face of Twin Cairns offers some steep mini-bowl skiing. Unfortunately, you're runs are only around 500 feet, and after about 15 turns, it's time to skin up and head back to the top. We did this a few times. Here I am looking down the slope, ready to pick a good line. The first run is always a waste because you are still assessing the slopes.

At the bottom of the bowl, the slope flattens out quite a bit. This is me coming down in front of the afternoon sun.

Now it's time to see Dan ski. I took these in a series so you could see a few of his turns. Pay close attention to the 5th picture. Dan got a little too far back on his heels. Unfortunately, there was no face-plant associated with Dan's skiing style. However, on Dan's last run, he did fall, but my camera was already put away.
