Note for 30 Oct 04: I went with Blair Piggot and Chris Goble. With such big plans for the day, the weather forced us to change objectives, and we then backed down from our backup plan. In the end, all we did was reach the north summit of Sofa Mtn. Click for the detailed trip report.

This is Chris and Blair hiking across the fields on their way to the mountain. Soon after I took this picture, we turned left, approaching the ridge on the upper left side of the picture. There is a trail leaving the roadside pullout, but at times it's a bit hard to follow, especially with snow covering a good part of it.

This is Blair heading up the lower section of the ridge. The lower section is mainly just hiking.

Here we see Chris coming up the lower slopes. In the background, you can see the fields we had to cut across.

This is more of the lower ridge, with Blair making his way up.

Here we see Blair and Chris cutting across the middle shoulder heading toward the upper ridge, which is where the good scrambling can be found.

At this point, the wind started to really pick up. Here we see Blair and Chris (lightweights) struggling against the wind.

This is a closer shot of the upper ridge. It's nice to attack it head on, but when it gets too tough, an easier route can generally be found by going left.

Look at that. Chris is growing horns!!!!

While Chris was playing with those horns, Blair jumped out to take a big lead.

Chris tops out after a short bit of scrambling. Plenty of good scrambling yet to come.

This is Chris making his way up one of the chimneys. The rock was really solid in this area, which is kind of rare for Waterton.

This is a look over toward the true summit. Unfortunately, very strong winds (and morale) prevented us from walking over there.

This is the final bit of the north ridge with the north summit seen here.

This is looking down the SE side of the mountain. The ice climb seen in the background is Sullivan Falls.
