Note for 18 Jun 05: I went with Blair Piggot. With foul weather in the forecast, we just went on a scouting trip to find new alpine rock routes, and we figured we'd bag something in the process. We first bagged Avion Ridge, then we retraced our steps and bagged Newman. We then continued further along the ridge to GR127513. We started to try for Glendowan, but the wind was too strong for the knife edge ridge. The weather turned out to be mostly sunny, but very windy. Click for a detailed trip report.

Our trip first started by bagging Avion Ridge. Check that part first.

This is Newman Peak, as seen from the col between Newman Peak and Avion Ridge. The route is as straight forward as it appears.

But first things first. We decided to rest and eat lunch at the col.

But, after a nice lunch, Blair was off to the races. The route just goes straight up toward the summit.

From the summit of Newman, you can see the summit of Spionkop Ridge to the north.

Also from the summit, you can go east toward the HIGHER outlier, which we did.

This is from that higher outlier, looking back down on the summit of Newman. In the background, a bit to the left, you can see part of Avion Ridge.

Once off of Newman Peak, we went back down to Goat Lake, then started heading down Goat Lake Trail (seen here). The walk back along Snowshoe Trail was long, flat, boring and uneventful. We should have brought our bikes.
