Note for 25 Oct 03: I went with Blair Piggot. This was a headlamp start, very windy and cold. Frostbite on our fingers, and waterbottles were freezing. We got a bit off-route and ended up in some 5.4 climbing, backed off but then found the way. Click here for a detailed trip report.

25 Oct 03 - Blair and I did a predawn start up Galwey. We got about half way up the lower slopes before the sun started to crest the horizon. It was a beautiful sunrise.

25 Oct 03 - Once the sun came up, we paused for a couple of minutes to eat a snack. The alpineglow was in full effect... even on Blair.

25 Oct 03 - This was taken on the way down, nearly in the parking lot. The peak in the distant is Mt. Galwey. There is a well worn trail, but basically, you want to head straight for the peak.

25 Oct 03 - Assuming it's light outside, when you get to the base of the mountain, you will see a trail that rises to the left, cutting across the scree slope and gaining the left shoulder. This is really loose scree, but it was enjoyable on the way down.

25 Oct 03 - After you go over the ridge in the above picture, you'll continue to make your way up and left. This is the upper portion of the mountain. You want to go a bit to the right at the end. Just below the summit, you'll see a flat spot to the right and the summit to the left. Circle the summit counter-clockwise, and you'll see a window. This is where we went wrong. Rather than circle around to the window, we tried to go straight up, which resulted in some 5th class scrambling. We never thought to circle around to the window, until we almost gave up and started to head back down.

25 Oct 03 - As you round the corner, you'll see a really neat window that overlooks the prairies below and to the east. Because it was a windy day with wind coming out of the west, this made for a nice sheltered spot to stop for a break, but first we had to run up and touch the summit (about 20 feet higher).

25 Oct 03 - This is what it looks like looking through the window. Pretty cool eh.

25 Oct 03 - Here is Blair on the summit.

25 Oct 03 - Now it's my turn to be at the summit.

25 Oct 03 - Here we see Blair jogging back down the scree on the way down. The wind was pretty strong, and you can't see it in the picture, but he had a big cloud of dust kicking up behind him and the wind was carrying it away. That was neat.
