Blair and I started out by walking along the Snowshoe Trail for 4.6km, which is where the Goat Lake Trail (seen here)
branches off. The Snowshoe Trail is very flat and would make an excellent bike ride. The Goat Lake Trail is pretty
steep and quickly gains elevation on its way to Goat Lake. The peak in the background is actually an oulier of Avion
Ridge.

After a quick trip through the initial trees, you start to catch glimpses of the waterfall, which drains Goat Lake.
The trail will cut across the slope in the center of the picture and eventually intersect the waterfall at the top.
Porcupines must love it here. There is a backcountry campground at Goat Lake, and it looks like the porcupines have
been munching on the signs. I guess you could say there are 'signs' that porcupines are in the area :-)

After the lake, you start heading across the hanging valley to the col in the background. On your way, you go
through a couple of rock bands. For the first one, we broke through it near the waterfall. For the second one,
we went off to the right.
Once we reached the col, we quickly spoted the Castle River Valley to the north. If you look closely at the center
of the picture, you can see the Castle Spires in the distance.
This is looking back toward Goat Lake to the SE, where we just came from. Still a lot of lingering snow.
Off in the distance is the Red Rock Canyon Valley (and parking lot).

This is the initial part of Avion Ridge. While it would be nice to walk along the ridge crest, the height gain
would be waisted. There is a trail which goes along the backside and side-cuts a scree slope all the way to the
Avion summit ridge.
Here we see Blair walking along the trail, in route to the summit ridge. The summit is seen in the upper left
corner of the picture.
More of the same trail, except now the summit in more in the center of the picture.
Now on the final summit ridge, and it's a race against the bad weather coming in from the west.
From the summit, looking west, you can see the rain coming. Fortunately, it barely missed us to the north.
From the summit of Avion Ridge, we then went back to the col, and ascended
Newman Peak.
