The best thing about Logan's Pass is not Mt. Reynolds, but the fact that the area gets a lot of snow... snow you can ski on most of the summer. On a typical year, Logan's Pass opens on Memorial Day, but this year (2003), it openned on June 1st. Click for my Logan's Pass page to see the various yo-yo skiing opportunities.

07 Jun 03 - Mt. Reynolds is a fairly easy objective down in Logan's Pass. It's close to the parking lot, not technical, and provides great views. Judging from the register, it's pretty popular with the locals.

07 Jun 03 - The approach route to Reynolds cuts across the flat area behind the info center. This flat area is very popular with the tourists. You see lots of people walking around in their tennis shoes and jeans. From the flat area, make your way up the steep snow slopes to gain the ridge below the red dot. Please note the red dot might not be there when you arrive. From there, you'll follow a trail around the western side of Mt. Reynolds, before heading up the SW Slopes.

07 Jun 03 - Here is another picture of Reynolds and the slope you follow to gain the ridge.

07 Jun 03 - Eventually, the slope becomes steep enough that the skis can no longer cut across. We had to take off our skis, put them on the packs, and hike straight up. After we bagged Reynolds, this slope was a blast to ski down. Which in hindsight, we could have done without the scramble and just yo-yo'd this all day. It was fantastic.

07 Jun 03 - Once at the top, it made for a nice rest break. In the background, behind Blair is Mt. Bearhat. In spite of it's looks, this face is only a scramble.

07 Jun 03 - On with the scramble. From the ridge that we were on, we needed to drop down to the col between where we were and Reynolds. We would then cut across the west side of Reynolds (seen here) and swing around to the SW ridge. At the base of the slopes to the right (out of the picture) is Hidden Lake. We could see that their wasn't much snow on the west side, and we figured the SW ridge would also be dry, so we stashed our skis under a rock and left them at the top of this ridge.

07 Jun 03 - Here we see Blair scrambling down off the ridge, reaching the base of Reynolds. The quality of rock is just crap.

07 Jun 03 - Once around to the SW ridge, you'll find a narrow chimney to scramble up, with brings you to an open scree bowl. Move through the scree bowl, angling right until you reach the steep cliffs. At that point, you'll need to traverse left to get back to the SW ridge. The entire route has lots of cairns, so when in doubt, just look around.

07 Jun 03 - Here is the traverse. Basically, just past the two snow patches is where we climbed up the cliff. It wasn't very easy wearing ski boots. The next 200 feet or so is picking your way through the cliffs. It was a lot of fun, but you wouldn't want to fall here.

07 Jun 03 - Eventually, you top out from the cliffbands and you reach the summit ridge. The views from here were awesome.

07 Jun 03 - Everything is bigger in the States. Here we see Blair with the summit register. It's huge. We were the third party of the year, which is surprising since the road was just openned six days earlier. In the background, you have St. Mary Lake and Going to the Sun Mountain.

07 Jun 03 - 50 minutes after leaving the summit, Blair and I were back at our skis. We relaxed for a while in the sun, then decided to do some skiing. The parking lot is just out of sight, but basically it's at the top/center of the picture. What a terrific time.
