Note for 29 Mar 03: I went with Blair Piggot and Ian Rainey as a ski tour; however, I just didn't have the energy to do it that day. Very bad weather and lack of motivation turned me around at 9,100 ft. Blair and Ian pressed on and summitted. Click here for my detailed trip report.

24 Feb 01 - This picture was taken on a previous trip to Fossil Mtn, however, the approach to Boulder Pass is the same. This was taken heading up through skoki near the half-way hut (AKA: Ptarmigan Hut). On the right is Mt. Redoubt. On the left, you'll see Ptarmigan Peak. In the background (over Bolder Pass) you can see Fossil Mtn.

24 Feb 01 - This is another picture taken on the Fossil Mtn trip. Shown in the picture, you see Ptarmigan Peak on the right. Boulder Pass is on the right side of Ptarmigan Peak. We went to Boulder Pass then up the snow slopes of Ptarmigan Peak.

29 Apr 03 - On the Ptarmigan trip, we stopped for our second snack break just below Boulder Pass. The wind was very strong that day, so we wanted to stay in the trees to eat. The ridge barely seen in the background is the back of the Lake Louise Ski Area.

29 Apr 03 - Here we see our objective as seen from Boulder Pass. The slope was a lot steeper than indicated by the photo. Our biggest challenge on this trip would be to stay out of avalanche areas.... well, at least minimize them. We pretty much stayed on the climber's right side of the snow, sticking to ridges and the tops of bowls where we could.

29 Apr 03 - This is looking toward Richardson Ridge. An avalanche had occured a few day prior, which ran to ground and spanned nearly 3km in length. That's a lot of snow.

29 Apr 03 - Here we see Ian and Blair making their way up through the bottom cliff bands. Once above these cliff bands, you'll need to get over and around a couple of small bowls, as you make your way to a large gully below the col.

29 Apr 03 - This is Blair taking a 'bold' line toward that cornice. Our goal was to get on top of that cornice because it would yield a much safer line. Of course, getting to the cornice put us in a bad position. Actually, it wasn't as bad as seen here. There is a deep gully between Blair and that cornice. So, Blair isn't really as exposed as he appears to be.

29 Apr 03 - You see. It all worked out. Now Blair is on top of the cornice. Coming back down, Blair skied off the cornice (intentionally) and he had a pretty big crash. He actually bonked his head on a submerged rock. Why don't we wear helmets when we go backcountry skiing.
