18 Jan 03 - Being a winter ascent of Dolomite, we started out on skis. We were hoping to be able to
ski most of the way up the mountain. The best case scenario would be to ski right to the base of the summit
towers. Here we see Derek, Blair, and Peter looking for the best path. This is the point where we left the
popular ski trail around Dolomite to go up the main avalanche gully.

18 Jan 03 - Once we broke off the main trail, there was absolutely no base. With each step, we were
walking on the scree under the snow. Our skis incurred lots of scratches on this trip. The yellow line shows
our ascent path. We left the ski about a 100 yards from where this picture was taken. The rest was on foot.
The red dot shows our objective... the fourth tower.

18 Jan 03 - Here we are moving up the slope. The snow provided nice footing in this particular spot,
but it was only about 2 inches deep.
|
|
18 Jan 03 - This first bit was rather steep. Here we see Peter (circled in red) making his way up behind me.
At this point, we were gaining elevation quickly.

18 Jan 03 - Another picture of Peter coming up the slopes.

|
18 Jan 03 - The red line shows our ascent path and where we stopped. There is an extra dot above the 4th tower,
to show our objective. If you look closely at "3 dots before the end of our path", you'll notice a bit of snow. This
was a big avalache gully that we had to cross. It was a bit unnerving at first, but the snow consolidation was so bad
that it was okay to cross.

|
18 Jan 03 - Here is Peter crossing the avalanche gully. As you can see, from the sight of the gully, you would have
lots of concern crossing it, but it turned out to be okay. After that gully, we worked our way into the gullies between
towers 3 and 4, but turned around because of remaining daylight. As it turned out, we made it back to the car 20 minutes
before it got dark.

18 Jan 03 - Looking to the north of Dolomite is Cirque Peak... another one I'll be trying in the winter.
