29 Sep 01: Storelk was the last scramble I had to do in order to complete this section of the scrambles book.
I had considered doing Storelk from Tyrwhitt by following the Elk Ridge, but thought I should first
do it the "normal" way. The trip through the trees was pretty easy. The trees aren't very dense,
and there are tons of animal trails which generally lead in the right direction. Basically, the
route ascends one ridge until you meet the main ridge. Turn right, and go to the summit. The upper
portions of the first ridge is where the "difficult" section is found, but we didn't think it was too bad.
The main ridge was just a walk along an exposed slope. If you didn't like the exposure, you could always
drop down on the west side and grovel in the scree.

29 Sep 01: As we approached the col at the base of the first ridge, you start to see
what type of scrambling will be involved. Despite the temptation to stay on the edge of this ridge, you're actually better
staying about ten yards away from the edge of it.

|
29 Sep 01: This is the first ridge as seen from the col. This is the side you want to go up. When you get
to the top of this ridge, you'll have to go a bit to the left, so you might as well head that direction from the start.

29 Sep 01: This is the upper portion of the first ridge. This is the difficult section.
I actually found a cam here that some previous party used as a rapell. That's an expensive way
to rapell. I suppose if it was icy, that would be needed, but for us, it was pretty easy.
Finding the cam was a special treat for me. It was my first cam. It looks to be in great
condition too!!!

29 Sep 01: Once you get to the main ridge, the rest is just a walk in the park. Here we
see Taco starting the main ridge. Taco is in excellent shape. I told him to go forward so I could take
his picture. Really, I was just trying to catch my breath.

|
29 Sep 01: A few minutes later, we were at the summit. We had great conditions getting
to the summit, but once on the summit, the wind picked up and it got chilly. This is Taco at the
summit with Storm Mtn in the background.

|
29 Sep 01: Looking north from the summit of Storelk, you can see the connecting ridge to Mt.
Tyrwhitt. You can also see the Kananaskis Lakes at the northern end of Elk Valley.
|
|
29 Sep 01: Looking across Hwy 40, you can see Storm Mtn.
|
|
29 Sep 01: Just north of Storm Mtn, you can see Mt. Rae and Arethusa. In the background on the
right side, you can see Banded Peak in Bragg Creek.
