Note for 30 Jul 00: Went with Rob. This was actually an ACC trip, but there was just the two of us. It was a hot day. 25°C with no breeze. The mosquitos were really bad and toward the top, we had problems with horseflies.

Carnarvon was a great scramble. Lots of hands-on stuff. Here is a picture of the peak as seen from Hwy 1, west of Field, near Hoodoo Campground. Basically, you start at Emerald Lake, go to Hamilton Lake, then up the right skyline ridge, shown here.

Here, we see Hamilton Lake with Carnarvon in the background. The summit is actually not in view from here. The ascent is up the left ridge. Once you get to Hamilton Lake, turn left, go up the dirt hill, then onto the ridge. Follow the ridge to the top.

This is part of the ascent ridge on the way to the summit. It can be steep in places, but that is what makes this such a fun scramble. There are a couple of snow gullies along the way, but nothing a set of crampons won't take care of.

After a lot of climbing, you can cross a snowy summit ridge to the dry cairn. Here we see Rob trying to orient the map and name off all the surrounding peaks.

Here I am on the snowy part of the summit eating a nectarine. Mmmm

There are some great views from the summit of Carnarvon. You can see here in the picture, The President, Vice President, and Emerald Glacier. Not shown here, but visible from the summit, is Mt. Hector, Victoria, Pope, Hungabee, and many others.
