Note for 29 Oct 00: I went with John. This was my first bike ride off a paved trail. It was a rude awakening. We rode to the campsite, crossed the river, then went up the wrong gully (actually wrong side of the mountain), which resulted in 5.4-5.5 rock climbing, with lots of exposure. Eventually, we hit a frozen waterfall and had to retreat, 700 ft from the summit.
Note for 05 Oct 03: I went with Gerry Drotar. Very hot for October at 25°C. Everything was dry. No problems crossing the creek. Click for a detailed report.

This was my second attempt at Romulus. The first attempt had John and I on the wrong side of the mountain. When we pulled into the Romulus Campground, we headed to the back of the campground on the back-right. We then headed up a drainage, which led to cliffs, and very difficult scrambling. We were eventually turned around by ice. On the second attempt, Gerry and I headed to the back-left of the campground, and hiked around to find the correct drainage (seen here). Alan describes two routes in this drainage. You could grovel up the scree in the back of the drainage, which was our descent route. The other option is to head left and gain the ridge as quickly as possible. Given the heat of the day, and the significant lack of a breeze, we headed to get onto the ridge. This turned out to be a fine choice.

Here we are on the ridge with the valley we just came up behind us. From the ridge, we had great views the rest of the way to the summit.

Here we see Gerry with part of the ridge behind him. There are a few disheartening false summits along this ridge. Behind Gerry, we see one of them. Incidently, this is the closest I would come to Gerry for most of the trip. Gerry had a lot of energy that day.

This is Gerry on the ridge. He was really starting to get ahead of me, so I yelled up to him, offering to take his picture. In reality, I just needed to catch my breath. That's the summit in the background.

Here we see Gerry at the summit. It was a hot day, so lounging at the summit was a nice treat. Unfortunately, we started pretty late in the day, so daylight would be a problem if we didn't get off the mountain at a reasonable time.

From the summit of Romulus, you have great views of the Glasgow to Banded traverse (G-C-O-B).
