After the 6.5km bike ride up the Little Elbow Trail, we all stashed our bikes looked for the driest way across
the Little Elbow River. Eventually, we all just sucked it up, took off our boots and socks, rolled up our pants,
and started across. Here we see Linda coming across. That was really cold. |
Once across the river, we dried off our feet, put the boots back on and got a sense of the general direction we
needed to go. We wanted to go around this shoulder in front of us and head up the drainage. |
At first, we didn't find a trail. We just headed up through the trees. This was short-lievd as we quickly
found remnants of a trail. Seen here is Vern and Raff. |
It doesn't take long to break out of the trees. Looking back toward the valley bottom (to remind us of
the river crossing), we see Gary and Linda coming out of the trees. |
Further up the scree slope, we get better views of the walls of Remus' outlier. |
About half way up the slope, the group split. The main pack went up a huge scree gully that left Jason and I
looking for anything to avoid that. Jason and I went left and headed directly to the ridge. I think it was
a better ascent route because our scree was chunkier and we had a little bit more solid rock. |
We quickly made our way to the col. Jason is 6'4" with about a 5ft stride. Trying to keep up with him left me
sucking air, especially having not done anything since August. Reaching the ridge called for a break. We ducked
behind a rock to get out of the gusty wind and pondered where the other group was. The other group would come
up to the ridge off in the distance. Surprising to us, they caught us very quickly. We figured we were at
least 15 minutes ahead of them. While we took our break, they were on the other side of this nub, taking
their own break. |
Just past the point where we reached the ridge, the final big slope was in front of us. Jason broke trail
up the remaining snow slope, and when he sensed that I was using him, he'd take these giant 5 ft strides. At that point,
I was taking three steps to his one. |
This is looking back down the slope from just below the chimney. |
Once below the chimney, we all regrouped. Some of us wore crampons up the chimney, which I fuond easier. |
Here we see Jason at the top of the chimney with Vern in the chimney. |
After I ascended, Raff and Frank start up. |
This is just below the summit. The wind was fearce that day. |
Back to the gully, we see Dave climbing out of the gully with Jason watching. |
A few steps later, and we are at the summit. Here we see Jason relaxing. |
The descent was quick. We all went down the huge scree gully that most of the group went up. The upper slopes
allowed for great scree skiing, demonstrated here by Jason. |
Looking back up the slope, the route that Jason and I took went straight up the middle of the picture. |
This is the gully that the others went up and that we all went down. Seen in this picture is Bill, Gary, and Raff. |
