Note for 01 Apr 00: There was a lot of snow on the ground, and I thought I could follow the avalanche gully up, but it ended up being a dead-end. That will teach me for deviating from Kane's book.

Note for 29 Apr 00: What a difference a month makes. I didn't hit snow until half way through the trees, and even then, the snow was avoidable all the way to the summit. I got a very early start for this one. I left the truck at 0600 and was on the summit shortly after 0830. Temperatures were around -3°C (24°F) with either gusty winds or no winds.

01 Apr 00 - The correct route, as described in Kane's book, follows the summit ridge, which is noted by the red line in the picture. The idea is to walk along the canal until you are in line with the ridge, and then head up through the trees to gain that ridge. Well, given the snow on my first attempt, I was looking for an easy way out. I thought I could head up the avalanche gully (shown in orange). The snow in there would be firm, and I wouldn't sink to my knees every step of the way. I figured I would find some weakness in the ridge toward the top. Well, when I got up there, I couldn't find a weak enough spot to climb through with my plastic boots. Knowing that my family was in the Goat Creek parking lot waiting for me, I didn't have the desire to head back down to the base of that ridge and start back up again. I knew I would come back.

29 Apr 00 - I didn't want to make the same mistake twice, so I think I over shot the ridge a little bit. I ended up a little on the east side of it, but I found it was very easy going. Once you clear the trees, you see the two twin points. The cairn is on the one on the left.

29 Apr 00 - With the self timer, I took a picture of myself!!! My camera actually rolled over the first time I tried it, but my second attempt turned out nicely.

29 Apr 00 - When I looked at the register, I saw that I was the first to sign it for the year. I thought that was pretty cool at the time, but when I got back down to my truck, I realised that I was not only the first to climb it this year, but this century. That made it even cooler. The log book says, "29 Apr 00 - Woo Hoo! First ascent of the season, for this peak. 2:33 coming up. Beautiful day! No clouds, no wind. +3 at 0830. Dave Stephens, Calgary." Of course, then I have to put in a plug for the website.
