Note for 14 Oct 01: Well, I said I wouldn't have to go back to Mt. Fable, but when the new edition of the scrambles book came out, it revealed a Fable to Gap traverse. On this day, I went back. It snowed all day with temperatures just below 0°C and lots of clouds. The slabs getting over to Gap were very slippery. RobM and I had to go up and down a lot of extra distance to avoid some of the exposed slabs.

14 Oct 01 - This is the entire traverse from Fable to Gap. The picture was taken just down hill from the summit of Gap Peak. By the time we reached Gap Peak, most of the snow from earlier that day had melted. Basically, you head up the valley on the left of the ridge to the Fable col. Once at the col, just walk along the ridge. There are lots of slabs on this route, so if it's wet or snowy, you might want to pick a better objective.

14 Oct 01 - This is taken from the Fable col. The beginning of the ridge is pretty flat. In fact, it's a bit downhill. There is very little route finding until you get into the middle. The route finding is worse in wet conditions because you have to go around the slabs.

14 Oct 01 - This is Rob traversing from the Fable col to the Gap ridge seen above. Pretty easy stuff so far.

14 Oct 01 - Here we are from the above picture looking back at Mt. Fable. It wasn't in good condition that day. Fable is mostly a slab climb, so going up Fable in those slippery conditions wasn't an option.

14 Oct 01 - Around the middle of the traverse, things get a bit more difficult in the snow. You start to encounter a lot of slab, and route finding becomes a problem. In dry conditions, you could just walk along the ridge without any problems at all.

14 Oct 01 - In dry conditions, you would be able to walk across the slabs, but this day was different. Because of the snow, the slabs were slippery, and after sliding down one of them, we decided to walk around the rest. This added a considerable amount of height gain to the journey. The red arrow points to Rob.

14 Oct 01 - Eventually the summit is near. We were flipping back and forth across the ridge, and dipping down to go around slippery sections. In doing this, we actually overshot the summit and we had to come back at it from the south.

14 Oct 01 - Here we see the summit just a few more steps.
