Note for 02 Sep 01: Sunny, light wind, and dry conditions. We set out to do both Pilot and Brett, but ended up only bagging Pilot. We hiked up the fire road and reached a wooden bridge in 37 minutes. The book said roughly an hour, so we continued on until the one hour mark. We ended up back tracking to the bridge we found the first time. This waisted 45 minutes. Coming down, Kevin left his camera and had to circle back to get it. Another 45 minutes. We decided not to try for Brett in fear of walking out by headlamps.

Kevin and I took the first major drainage up Pilot Mtn, where we ended up on the left side of the "impenetrable wall". A quick traverse around the bowl, and we were able to cut up through it. After that, we encountered a miserable scree slope, then some fun scrambling toward the top.

On our descent, we headed toward Mt. Brett. This was taken after descending back through the "impenetrable wall". Basically, the ascent route goes up the left skyline ridge.

This picture was taken from Mt. Brett's ridge, but it shows the angle of the ascent ridge for Pilot. You just go up the left skyline ridge.

As you approach the summit, you have to go up a few "fun" areas. Here we see Kevin making his way up. The rock was a bit loose in areas, so we had to be careful.

Between the fun spots, we had to walk up scree. Yuck.

Eventually, we made it to the summit. In the background, you can see the summit of Mt. Brett.

From the summit of Pilot Mtn, you have a nice view of Mt. Ball.

Across Redearth Creek, you can see the ascent route up Copper Mtn. Basically, it's a straight shot to the summit. In the far background, toward the right, you can see Mt. Temple.
