Note for 21 Sep 02: I went with Paul Russell. Pre-dawn start under brisk temperatures. Clear skies and no wind. A little bit of ice on route, and we got a bit off route, but no major troubles.

21 Sep 02 Norquay was a fun scramble. We got a little off route toward the end of the route, but we turned out okay. Paul and I got a very early start. We started about an hour before the sun came up, so we did the ski run part in the dark, then we waited for the sun to come up. The nice thing about starting so early is that you are off the mountain by the time normal people wake up. Then you've got your entire day ahead of you.

This picture is taken from the slopes of Sulphur Mtn later that day. It shows the two summits of Norquay, the east and west (true) summit.

21 Sep 02 As mentioned, we got a pre-dawn start, and when we got to the top of the chair lifts, the sun was just starting to peak above the horizon. Here is Paul standing on top of the chair lift building. From this point, we went straight back to the gully. This involves some hands on scrambling immediately, but nothing too tough. Once through that rock band, we just ascended the gully to the col.

21 Sep 02 Once you reach the col, the grunt work is over and the fun begins. Here we see Paul at the col. We have to go up the two "bumps" in the ridge before coming to the east summit. There's one tricky spot in getting up the second bump just before the east summit.

21 Sep 02 This is the main summit as seen from just below the east summit. Unfortunately, the shadows of the morning are screwing up my picture.

21 Sep 02 This was picture taken on descent, but this is also just before the crux of the climb, just before the east summit. Click here to enlarge

21 Sep 02 This was also taken on descent, but this is Paul going through the crux. In hindsite, it wasn't too difficult. Just before the true summit, Paul and I got off route, and our "new path" became the crux.

21 Sep 02 This is Paul getting off route. It looked like a logical route. The true route actually crosses the gully to the right, then circles back a little bit behind you. Paul and I failed to see this, and we scrambled up the ridge along the left side of the gully. This got steep and exposed rather quickly. Click here to enlarge

21 Sep 02 Here's a picture of the route Paul and I took. The gully was very icy, so we stuck more onto the ridge, then when the ridge got too difficult, we cut across the gully and scrambled our way to the summit. The true scramble route cuts across the gully where this picture was taken.

21 Sep 02 After clearing the gully, we were at the summit. Here I am going through the scrambles book, trying to figure out where we went wrong. This is one of Paul's pictures.

21 Sep 02 So, while I'm flipping through the scrambles book, Paul is flipping through the summit register. You'd think he would take his pack off and rest a little. :-)
