Note for 14 Jul 06: Solo trip. I thought I'd try this while on vacation in Fairmont Hot Springs. I left Fairmont at 0400, but by the time I got to the Floe Lake Parking Lot, it was pouring rain. I slogged up anyway, and got to the first rockband, but the wind picked up and I was soaking wet. I also came across fresh snow and verglass. With the crux still to come, I turned around.

I got a good early start, leaving the Floe Lake Parking Lot by 0530. The trailhead is next to the orange marker on the side of the road. If you look closely, you'll see a white sign to the right. That's the trailhead. As for this particular day, it was raining pretty hard, so it wasn't exactly an enjoyable approach.

This is a better shot of the trail. For the first hour, the trail is quite nice. It's narrow (about 12" wide), but it's an easy grade. I'd recommend it for mountain biking (for at least the first 5km).

In just under an hour, you reach a creek draining from the left. Despite the forest fire, the bridge is still there (or has already been replaced). If you look closely at the center of the picture, the bridge is right in the middle. It's just a few logs.

This is looking down stream from the bridge. Lots of damage from the forest fires.

It took me 1:45 to reach this point. This is the drainage where you should turn off the trail and head upslope. The grey cliff band that cuts across the middle of the picture is easily hiked on the right side. My eventually turn around point is right where the cloud covers the gully.

From about half way up the above gully, this is looking back down.

From the same spot, this is looking up the gully. I made it up through the black rock and into the tan rock. After that, I decided to turn around.

Coming back down the rain was clearing out, which produced some awesome cloud pictures as the wind picked up and the clouds were getting tossed into the cliffs. Pretty cool.

The trip back to the car was uneventful. The rain had stopped, and I was starting to dry out. Something must have come over me, because I ended up taking a couple of flower pictures, like this one.
