I did Pilot about a month earlier, and the plan was to do both Pilot and Brett, but we ran out of time
and daylight, so we decided we would have to come back for Brett.....and so I did. For Brett, I
decided to walk up the Redearth Creek fireroad until I was even with the shoulder of Brett. Then, I cut straight
up through the forest aiming for the base of Brett's long flat ridge. This was a mistake. I endured some of
the worst bushwhacking Alberta has to offer. It took me three hours to reach the flat open ride. Once on
the ridge, you can see Brett's summit. The only difficulty is on the ridge just before the summit. When I did
this scramble, there was a bit of snow, but it posed no problems for the difficult stuff.

Here we see the lower ridge. My ascent route came right up the side of the ridge, as a direct line from Copper Mtn
(in the background). On decent, I got to the "notch" in the middle of the ridge, then dropped down into the valley
between Brett and Pilot. This was dead easy with minimal bushwhacking, and nothing like I encountered on the way up.

Here is the upper ridge, as seen from the summit. This is the difficult part. A lot of it is super exposed,
actually overhanging in one spot. As you go along the ridge, you find some big downclimbs in the middle of the ridge.
If the exposure bothers you, you can go completely around the exposed part on the right. Then you are only
playing with scree. I came down that way.

Here is part of the upper ridge. If you stick to the very edge of the ridge, the exposure can be exhilarating.

Here is a little more of the upper ridge. If you look closely, you can see two of the downclimbs.

After a whole bunch of slogging and a short fun ridge scramble, I made it to the summit, with Banff in the background.

I was really looking forward to reading the summit register. I figured that only the "diehard scramblers" would be
doing this one and I would probably know most of the names. Unfortunately, somebody allowed water to get inside the
cannister and everything was frozen. It took a lot of effort to get the thing open, only to find that the register
was completely frozen. I couldn't write on it or read it. I probably should have brought the register down with me,
but I didn't have a replacement book, so I left it up there.

This is Pilot Mtn as seen from the summit of Brett. It looks much harder from this side.
