Dave's Wildlife Pictures: Porcupine

The porcupine is an animal I've protected my vehicle against, but I had never seen one outside the zoo. Evidently, when you park your truck in the woods to go climbing for the weekend, they like to eat the rubber hoses from under your truck. They especially like brake lines. So, you're suppose to wrap your truck in chicken wire to keep them from roaming under your truck. I've done this a few times, but I had never seen a porcupine. When I finally did see one, they were much bigger than I thought. Perhaps I need bigger chicken wire.

Driving from Haines Junction to Kluane Lake, we saw this porcupine waddling on the side of the road. At first, I thought it was a big moving bush. When I stopped to photograph it, it waddled into the woods. I actually gave chase. Unfortunately, these two pictures are all I could snap. Hopefully, I'll see another one sometime and get better pictures.

While coming back out of Boom Lake on a scrambling trip to Mt. Bell, we came across this porcupine. I gave chase, but this is the best I could do with photographing him. He surprised me by climbing a tree. I didn't know they did that.
