Dave's Wildlife Pictures: Grizzly Bear

Grizzly Bears are quite hard to come by in the Canadian Rockies. This is probably a good thing. Seeing one of these in the wild is actually very dangerous. Grizzly Bears kill people every year, so stay away from them. When a grizzly bear becomes aggressive toward humans, the park warden will close the approach trails for various mountains. I've often been a victim of these closed trails, but actually seeing the grizzly is another thing all together.

These pictures were taken on a vacation I took in Fairmont Hot Springs Resort near Radium, BC. This one grizzly bear was in a field with her two cubs eating wild flowers.

The next two pictures came from my drive up to Mt. Logan. I spotted this grizzly eating along the side of the highway near Watson Lake, YT. From the angle of the left picture, the bear looks more like a black bear, but in the right picture, that hump shows itself leaving no doubt that the bear was a grizzly. The lighting was bad, which created a shadow effect on the bear, but I wasn't going to get out of the truck to get a better angle.

This is a couple of bears (making new bears) that I came across while driving up to the Columbia Icefields, near Bow Summit. It was a bad picture because I was in a hurry. Few people even see a grizzly in the wild, but I bet even fewer see them making whoopie.
