Columbian Ground Squirrels are very popular in alpine meadows around 5-7,000 feet. They are very similar to Richardson Ground Squirrels, which are better known as gophers. I've come across these creatures while scrambling up Mt. Rae, Cascade Mtn. and all over the Stanley Mitchell Hut.
