Black Bears are a little more popular than grizzly bears. They seem to be less shy than grizzly bears. You tend to see them on the side of the road or near railroad tracks. I've seen black bears a few times, but everytime except once, they have been along side a road. The first time was after completing a scramble up Mt. Chester off Smith Dorrien Trail. When I got back to the parking lot, there was a black bear waiting for me. Unfortunately, I was out of film, so I didn't get any pictures of it. The second time I saw a black bear, I was driving from Lake Louise toward Field, BC. Right beside the rail road tracks. Then, usually when I drive along Highway 93 toward Radium, I usually see black bear (and many more types of wildlife). Unfortunately, black bears tend to walk along railroad tracks quite a bit, and they get hit by trains fairly often. These are the pictures of the black bear along Highway 1 between Lake Louise and Field. ![]() Here are a few of the black bears I've seen on Highway 93. What's nice about these bears are that I can photograph them from INSIDE the car. ![]() ![]() Driving back from Logan, I caught this black bear sunning in the middle of the road. As I got closer, he decided to slowly stroll off the road and let me pass before returning to the warm asphalt.
