Haffner Creek
Total Height:
Technical Grade:
82 ft (25M)
WI 3
Note for 25 Dec 98: I went with Chris Wickens, Tom Maier, and Kevin Yang. Temperatures were around -5°C (23°F). The ice was in great condition. Although, from what I've heard, about other years, there wasn't much of it. We basically hung out in the corner and climbed the fat seepage until the watery ice froze our rope and we couldn't climb any longer.

Note for 27 Dec 01: I went with Rob D, and Tom M. Temperatures were around -24°C (-11°F). One WI-3 pillar in the front, then a WI-5 thin, broken pillar in the middle, then a WI-4 pillar. The mixed climbs in the narrows weren't in. We played on the WI-4 pillar all day, then we played on mixed stuff behind the pillar.

27 Dec 01 - Haffner is a neat place. There are many seepages (all one pitch) of varying degree. There is a lot of mixed climbing and grades can range from a WI-3 to a WI-5. Unfortunately, Haffner is usually crowded. If you are going there on a weekend, you better get there early. For this day, we climbed around on this one pillar because it had some mixed possibilities once the top rope was set up.

27 Dec 01 - Rob started the lead. Placing that first screw was kind of awkward. By the time, Rob placed his second screw, he backed off.

27 Dec 01 - Since Rob backed off, I decided to take over on lead. This was my first lead of the season, and my first WI-4 lead ever. I hate leading.

27 Dec 01 - Here's more of me leading.

27 Dec 01 - Once the top rope was established, we could play on the rock and do a bit of mixed climbing. Here I am playing around. I actually fell right after this picture. I was only about five feet of the ground, but because of rope stretch, I actually smacked the ground with my back.

27 Dec 01 - Now it's Tom's turn. Mixed climbing is a lot of work, but it's really fun.

27 Dec 01 - Look at Tom trying the funkie leg move.
