Note for 02 Jul 00: It wasn't the best of conditions. It was foggy, cloudy, snowy, and very windy. Temperatures were just above the freezing mark the most of the day. We were breaking fresh tracks the entire way up and sinking about 12-18 inches with each step. We never had to wear crampons. The 'schrund was no problem at all, but I could see how it will be in about 4-6 weeks. There is a large cravasse just above the col on the President, but a snow bridge held for that day. Beware of it later in the season. Rob and I were the first people on this summit for the new millenium.

It wasn't the best of weather. We left our Laughing Falls campground at 0450 and got to the hut by 0630. It was rainy, cloudy, foggy, snowy, etc, so we went into the hut to debate going at all. We saw a glimmer of blue, so we left the hut by 0650. Here I am with the President Glacier behind me.

Shortly after getting onto the glacier, the weather got worse (again). Here we see Rob coming up behind me. It was just a little bit cloudy.

From hut to the col, it took us just under 4 hours. We were breaking trail the entire way, sinking about 12-18 inches with each step. When we got to the col, we got a very brief break in the clouds. We could see Emerald Lake with Mt. Burgess in the background.

The weather had turned bad again, and we decided to go for the Vice President first. Here we are looking from the ridge of the Vice President down to the col with the President in the background. If you look closely, you can see part of the 'schrund.

40 minutes later, we were at the summit of the Vice President. Here we see Rob signing the summit register. As it turned out, we were the first to sign it this year!!

After the Vice President, we came back down to the col and debated about doing the President. The weather seemed to be getting worse, so we thought it was best to come down. Here we see Rob heading back to the Stanley Mitchell Hut. We hung out with the wives at the hut for a short period of time, and then we went back to Laughing Falls Campground. We were back at our camp site at 1600.
