Note for 05 Aug 00: I attempted Assiniboine from the SW side, but I missed the turn for Lunette Lake. I went around Assiniboine Lake, up the scree, and actually around to the RC Hind Hut.

Note for 10 Aug 00: My team went back to seek redemption. It was a sunny day, but afternoon thundershowers. There were a couple sections of snow and ice, and temperatures were around 15°C most of the day.

This was actually my second try for Assiniboine's SW side. The first time, I accidently walked all the way around the mountain and ended up at the Hind Hut, but that's another story. To do this route correctly, you have to find Lunnette Lake. Alan Kane's website describes the approach quite nicely, so I won't duplicate his work here. From Lunnette Lake, circle the lake counter-clockwise to about "11:00". From there, make your way up the hill to the left of the waterfall, and then onto scree moraines, shown here. This is actually Lunnette and Assiniboine. It's hard to tell the difference between the two.

We went up the snow and found various weaknesses in the rockbands. We targeted the Lunnette Col, and then went up the Assiniboine ridge. There was a lot of bad rock on these lower slopes, so take your time. As you went higher, the rock got better.

Here we see one of the many rock bands. This was actually on descent, but we went up this way too.

This is Derek coming up through one of the rock chutes. These chutes made getting through the rock bands rather easy.

After a few hours of climbing up through rock bands, you make your way onto more gentle slopes and up to the summit.

Nine hours after we left the car, we made it to the summit. Hurray!!! Click here for a larger version.

After holding my arm up for that last picture, I decided to take a much needed rest break at the summit.

While I was resting, Derek decided to do the same. Rob ran over to the north end of the summit to find the register (shown by the arrow).

Here we see Magog Lake and the NE ridge route.

Finally, I had to go check out the register.....not the typical PVC pipe container.
