Note for 18 Aug 02: This was an ACC trip that I led. Gerry Stewart, Paul Russell, Taco Van Ieperen, Gerry Drotar, and myself. We hiked in under rainy conditions, with little hope of actually climbing the peak. By morning, we had cloudless skies with incredible conditions. Most steps were boot top snow, with very little avalanche problems. GerryD and Taco were also able to get up Diadem.

Note for 14 Aug 04: I went with Dan Ronsky and Blair Piggot as a day trip. Sunny and dry conditions. I was amazed at how much the glacier has retreated. This peak was done as the first peak. We then traversed over and up Diadem Peak before returning to the car. Car to car was 14.5 hours. Click for a detailed report

14 Aug 04: We started pretty early and left the truck at 0420. We then crossed the Sunwapta River and headed up Woolley Creek. Once you hit the boulder field, you find yourself scanning the horizon for cairns, such as the one shown here. It's a bit trickier when you're doing it under headlamp.

14 Aug 04: As the sun was starting to come up, we rounded the shoulder of Mushroom Peak, hiked up the Waterfall and got our first views or our objectives. Woolley on the left and Diadem on the right.

14 Aug 04: As we got a little bit closer, the morning alpineglow started to reflect off the mountains.

14 Aug 04: Here we see Blair in the middle of the picture (hard to see) and myself off to the right. Lots of crevasses in here. We took the gully above me, then cut left across the rocks to get into the left gully. There was a lot of rockfall in the gully above me. So stay alert!!!.

14 Aug 04: This is me ascending the upper left gully. You are only in this gully for a short bit. Then you go further left to get on the upper Woolley Glacier.

14 Aug 04: Here I am hiking up the upper Woolley Glacier. It's relatively flat until you reach the col, which makes for a nice rest spot. In the upper right corner of the picture, is the summit of Mt. Woolley.

14 Aug 04: Leaving the col, there appeared to be some hidden crevasses, so we broke out the rope and spreadout. Of course, Blair in the front, Dan in the middle, and me in the back. As for crevasses, we didn't find any.

14 Aug 04: As always, the summit ridge of Woolley provides excellent views of Mt. Alberta.

14 Aug 04: I guess you could call this a little bump in the road. In the middle of Woolley's summit, there is a bit of a step. Not technical, but it will require you to use your axe and frontpoints.

14 Aug 04: Here we are at the summit with Mt. Alberta in the background. Left to right we have Dan, me and Blair. Dan and I belong to the OldGoats Climbing Club. Ironically, Blair is the oldest, and has since joined the club. In 2004, the OldGoats designed shirts. They aren't ideal colours, but they sure are recognizable.

14 Aug 04: After spending lots of time on the summit, we headed back to the col, so we could go up Diadem Peak. Here we see myself downclimbing that little step in the middle of the ridge.

Our trip then continued to go up Diadem Peak
